The idea

More curiosity. Fewer bad purchases.

Some hobbies involve a few dollars. Others involve trailers, storage, voltage systems, outboard motors and strangely specific measurements. My Expensive Hobbies is an independent reference site for the second category.

Why this site exists

We're starting with recreational boating because it combines interesting equipment with costly, easily avoidable purchasing mistakes. The goal isn't to tell you to buy the most expensive option. It's to explain what matters so you can make your own decision.

What we're doing differently

We focus on questions you can actually answer: what to measure, what a specification means, whether equipment is compatible, and which manufacturer's chart you should read. We include original calculators when they're genuinely useful.

Articles may be developed with AI assistance and based on publicly available documentation. We don't present AI-generated descriptions as firsthand testing, and we don't claim products have been physically evaluated unless a page explicitly documents that testing. Manufacturer instructions take precedence over general guidance. Readers should verify product compatibility before purchasing.

What comes after boating?

Maybe vehicles, shops, outdoor equipment, tools or other expensive pastimes. The name is intentionally bigger than one hobby. We'd rather expand slowly with practical resources than flood the internet with articles nobody needs.
