onX Premium helps plan; the land manager controls access

Offline mapping is useful where reception disappears, and onX Offroad Premium is a concrete option to compare with your existing maps. The paid features only earn their cost if you use them. Neither a map layer nor a route shared by another rider establishes current permission.

Shortlist: 3 options, selected for meaningfully different fits, budgets or system approaches. Compare the exact variant and total installed cost.

How we would decide

Try the mapping workflow before subscribing, then download the trip area and test it offline. Check the land manager’s current map, seasonal closures, permits and vehicle-width rules separately. Choose the subscription tier for features you need; do not pay for a more expensive tier merely to get a familiar route.

Editorial selections based on published product information, not hands-on testing. Follow the linked specifications for the exact variant and current availability.

Fit and purchase checklist

  1. Identify the actual public land unit and the managing authority.
  2. Use current motor-vehicle-use maps or posted designated-route maps where required.
  3. Check permits, registration, insurance, noise limits and operating seasons.
  4. Confirm ATV, UTV, dirt-bike and street-legal vehicles are treated as separate classes where relevant.
  5. Respect trail closures and sensitive surfaces after heavy rain or thaw.
  6. Pack out waste, avoid bypassing obstacles and document where you are permitted to park trailers.

The costly mistake

A two-track on satellite imagery is not evidence that motorized travel is permitted.
