Load distribution changes handling and vehicle axle loads. A percentage guess is not a scale reading.

Sherline scale or a trip to the vehicle scale?
A tongue scale earns its place when you change cargo positions frequently and want to repeat the same measurement at home. It complements a full scale visit: moving an ATV or cargo box changes both tongue load and axle loading. Measure the trailer in its actual travel condition rather than with empty tanks and the spare tire in the garage.
Shortlist: 3 options, selected for meaningfully different fits, budgets or system approaches. Compare the exact variant and total installed cost.

Sherline Trailer Tongue Weight Scale
A dedicated scale for measuring conventional trailer tongue load before you commit to a tow vehicle or hitch.
Before ordering: Choose a gauge range suited to the expected load and follow the support and measurement procedure. This does not measure axle loads.
Best fit: Conventional trailers with expected tongue weight below 2,000 pounds
A dedicated 2,000-pound-capacity tongue-weight scale that supports measurement at the coupler or a compatible trailer jack.
Before ordering: It is not intended for fifth-wheel pin weight. Follow the support-height procedure and confirm the expected tongue load falls within its measuring range.
Pick a gauge that lets you read your expected tongue load clearly, not simply the highest-capacity version. Use the trailer maker’s target load range and repeat the measurement after changing the load. Fifth-wheel pin weights require a different weighing approach.
Editorial selections based on published product information, not hands-on testing. Follow the linked specifications for the exact variant and current availability.
Fit and purchase checklist
Load the trailer as it will travel, including water, cargo and any spare equipment.
Use an appropriate tongue-weight scale or certified weighing method.
Confirm the vehicle, receiver, ball mount and trailer coupler ratings independently.
Check the trailer/vehicle manual for recommended tongue-load distribution.
Measure again after moving heavy gear or changing tank levels.
Remember tongue load takes away tow-vehicle payload, even when the trailer is below maximum rated mass.
The costly mistake
Balancing a trailer by eyeballing the fender gap is not a scale measurement.
