Rooftop box or hitch cargo rack?

Cargo volume, center of gravity, tailgate access and lighting obstruction decide the practical winner.

Motion 3 L or EXO GearLocker?

A roof box leaves the receiver free but adds overhead height and requires lifting gear above shoulder level. EXO GearLocker moves access lower but adds a base system and load behind the vehicle. The correct choice often becomes obvious when you test the garage opening and rear-hatch movement.

Shortlist: 3 options, selected for meaningfully different fits, budgets or system approaches. Compare the exact variant and total installed cost.

Thule Motion 3 L

A 440-liter roof box for gear that fits within your roof-load allowance.

Before ordering: Check hatch clearance, crossbar spread and overall parked height. Subtract both rack and empty box weight before loading.

Yakima EXO GearLocker

A hitch-mounted enclosed cargo option within the EXO system.

Before ordering: Requires a compatible EXO base arrangement. Count the base and box in hitch load; check exhaust, lights, plate visibility and hatch access.

Yakima JetStream crossbars

An aerodynamic crossbar option within a vehicle-specific Yakima rack system.

Before ordering: Bars alone are not a complete rack. Match towers and fit parts, then observe the lowest vehicle or rack-system limit.

How we would decide

Choose the Motion 3 if roof capacity, lifting and clearance work. Choose GearLocker if the hitch and complete EXO configuration support the loaded system and the rear remains usable. Include all mounts in both prices; comparing a bare box with a complete carrier is misleading.

Fit and purchase checklist

  1. List the objects and their actual dimensions instead of shopping by marketing volume alone.
  2. For roof boxes, check the vehicle roof limit, box mass and crossbar spacing.
  3. For hitch racks, check receiver tongue-load limits and rack extension/leverage restrictions.
  4. Check hatch access, backup camera, plate visibility, lights and exhaust clearance.
  5. Measure total height against garage doors and parking structures.
  6. Secure loads with approved restraints and check after driving a short distance.

The costly mistake

Moving luggage outside the cabin also moves it into wind, road spray and a new set of failure modes.
