The upgrade has to earn back its purchase price
At 15,000 miles per year and $4 per gallon, moving from 25 to 40 MPG saves $900 annually in fuel. An illustrative $4,000 purchase premium therefore takes about 4.4 years to recover on fuel alone. Financing, insurance, maintenance, resale and any other cost differences can change that result.

A few long trips rarely justify changing an otherwise suitable vehicle solely for fuel savings. Compute gallons as miles divided by miles per gallon for each vehicle.
Multiply the gallon difference by a plausible fuel-price range.

Avoid calling mileage reimbursement “profit” without subtracting depreciation and operating costs.
