Tow rating versus payload: the number that ruins road trips.
Trailer weight is only one limit. Tongue weight uses the tow vehicle’s payload alongside passengers and gear.

Run separate checks for loaded trailer weight, hitch limits, payload, axle ratings and combined weight.

Tongue load counts against vehicle payload. This worksheet does not verify axle or combined ratings.Reference: Ford — towing dictionary

Buy the measurement before the bigger hitch
A tow package can leave surprisingly little payload once people, luggage and trailer tongue weight are aboard. Start with your vehicle’s payload label, then weigh the travel-ready combination. If the loaded rear axle or vehicle is over its limit, a more expensive hitch does not solve the problem.

Sherline Trailer Tongue Weight Scale
A dedicated scale for measuring conventional trailer tongue load before you commit to a tow vehicle or hitch.
Before ordering: Choose a gauge range suited to the expected load and follow the support and measurement procedure. This does not measure axle loads.
Choose the Sherline when conventional tongue load is the missing measurement. Choose a brake controller only after the vehicle and trailer pass the weight checks; use an existing compatible factory controller if you already have one. A public vehicle scale remains necessary for actual axle and combination weights.

Fit and purchase checklist
Read the specific vehicle’s door-jamb payload label and towing manual.
Subtract people, luggage, accessories and loaded tongue weight from available vehicle payload.
Compare the actual loaded trailer weight with both vehicle and hitch limits.
Consider GCWR and the loaded tow vehicle, not just the headline maximum trailer rating.
Obtain scale weights with the travel configuration you will actually use.
Recheck tire pressures and ratings against the loaded vehicle/trailer specifications.
The costly mistake
A 5,000-pound tow rating does not give you permission to put 5,000 pounds on a trailer when payload is already consumed.
