THE MATH, NO DRAMA

Tow vehicle payload worksheet.

Make occupants, gear and loaded tongue weight visible against the door-jamb payload figure.

Example payload: a 1,300 lb label minus 370 lb occupants, 230 lb cargo, 450 lb tongue load and 60 lb accessories leaves 190 lb. Tongue load counts against vehicle payload. This worksheet does not verify axle or combined ratings.

A positive payload margin does NOT establish safe towing: towing rating, GCWR, axle ratings, actual tongue weight, hitch, braking, tires and applicable rules still apply.

PUT THE RESULT TO WORK

Buy the measurement before the bigger hitch

A tow package can leave surprisingly little payload once people, luggage and trailer tongue weight are aboard. Start with your vehicle’s payload label, then weigh the travel-ready combination. If the loaded rear axle or vehicle is over its limit, a more expensive hitch does not solve the problem.
